Meet Rev Jacky A friendly face on the South Oxfordshire’s Canal and surrounding waterways.
If you’ve ever wandered along the peaceful canals and waterways of England there’s a good chance you’ve crossed paths with someone who brings warmth, support and a genuine listening ear to everyone they meet, these are Waterways Chaplains. Locally, the Rev Jacky Bone, is one of over 100 Waterways Chaplains across the country dedicated to caring for boaters and all who live, work, or simply enjoy life along the water.
Who is Rev Jacky?
Rev Jacky is an ordained Baptist Minister serving with the Benefice of Witney—but don’t expect sermons or formal religious conversations unless you request them. As a Waterways Chaplain her role is simple: to be present, supportive, and approachable. She spends her time walking the towpaths, meeting people from every walk of life – anglers, joggers, dog walkers, canal workers, and of course, the boating community
Recently, we caught up with Jacky at the Witney Foodbank, where she was collecting a parcel for an elderly boater needing temporary assistance.
Jacky says:
“I love being able to help and support those who use and live on our waterways. Like anyone they can hit hard times and we try to help where we can. As chaplains we are there for the whole community, those of all faiths and none there’s no judgement. Mainly we take referrals and help liveaboard boaters, but we are also trained in water safety and how to help tourists through the locks.
How Waterways Chaplains help
Support is practical, down-to-earth, and always offered with respect. Here are just some of the ways Chaplains can make a difference:
- Referrals to food banks or provision of emergency food parcels
- Support when dealing with authorities such as the Canal & River Trust (CRT), Environment Agency (EA), local councils, or help with benefit claims
- Assistance with laundry, fuel, and everyday essentials
- A simple coffee and a friendly chat when someone needs company
- Boat blessings or renamings, marking special moments on the water
- Supporting those who work or are touring on the waterways.
